If you shined a flashlight into the night sky, would it be blue?
Since the color of the sky results from short wavelengths of light being absorbed by particles in the atmosphere and scattered, if I shined a powerful flashlight into the night sky would I be able to see blue in the area that the flashlight is shined?
You would need a ridiculously powerful flashlight, one with perhaps an intensity equal to that of the sun incident on the atmosphere, about 1400 Watts/square meter.
And even still, very little of that blue light would be scattered back to you. From an observer in orbit space, they would observe a blue spot on the globe (should no cloud cover get in the way), but you perhaps will observe very little blue.
In Rayleigh scattering, very little light is scattered opposite light's incident direction. Most light is only scattered a small change in direction over the entire atmosphere. You see it from Earth's surface scattered across the sky, but it really isn't much change in direction from the perspective of a photon of light.
