I have cookware that is "hard-anodized" aluminum (treated with sulfuric acid). When I read about sulfuric?
acid and discovered that sulfuric acid is toxic, I was very concerned with me cooking in it. Is it safe to use this cookware?
Sulfuric acid is toxic primarily because it is corrosive, like all strong acids. Sulfuric acid can damage tissue and upset the pH balance inside your body.
When neutralized with a base, sulfuric acid becomes the sulfate ion, which is harmless.
Furthermore, the sulfuric acid would have been all washed off your cookware at the factory. Even if a tiny trace remained, it would be too dilute to be corrosive, and therefore would be nontoxic.
The "hard-anodizing" process uses sulfuric acid and electric current to produce a layer of aluminum oxide on top of the aluminum. This oxide layer protects the aluminum surface from corrosion. The aluminum oxide is highly insoluble and therefore nontoxic. All aluminum that has been exposed to air has a thin layer of oxide; this process just makes it thicker.
So to sum it up, this cookware is completely safe. Certainly safer than teflon cookware, which can release some chemicals when heated (one of which is notoriously toxic to pet birds), but teflon is most likely still pretty safe.
