Why would the 4-wheel drive light go on and off, and run at 4500 RPMs out of the blue?
I have a 95 Chevy Blazer, and while driving on the highway at 70 mph my 4 wheel light went on by itself. I had to put it in neutral to get it off, and after I put it back in gear, it started running at 4000-4500 rpms and would not accelerate. (It was not still in neutral.) Any ideas?
It didn't go into neutral, it went into low range. This car might detect if the front and rear wheels turn at different speeds, assuming one set of tires are slipping, it may engage 4-wheel automatically. If that happened while driving down the road, check your tire pressures.
By now you have no doubt realized that transfer cases in these cars like to be shifted while stopped, or when barely moving, and you have probably gotten it back into high-range already.
